In concrete terms
Here, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] lim, is a handy bit of code:

Said code, when pasted into the header of a fic, will give you this:

WARNING: rape, non-con, dub-con, incest, self-harm

By highlighting the blacked-out text, people can see warnings. If you're not someone who needs to be warned, or prefers not to know, no need to highlight; no possibility of learning something you would rather not.

You can change the text within the coding so that the particular terms that apply to your story appear.

Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] lim!

eta: and there are some other options [here]! Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] reginagiraffe for the link.

Do you mind if I link people to this post? Also, thank you for posting this; I'll definitely be using it now. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lim as well!

I don't know why that is, but when I see this post of yours on my friends page (and lamardeuse's similar one on my circle page on dreamwidth, so this is not specific to my vaguely personalized layout on LJ), the little textarea in which the code appears is in fact completely blank. I see the code fine once I am in the post itself (on a default style comment page), though.

Thought it was worth pointing out, as it might happen to others also.

It might be your browser? I just looked at Cate's post on your friends page and could see the code in the box a-okay (viewing in Firefox 3 / Mac).

THERE! Now if that's not enough to make both sides happy IDEK >.>

I personally always use warnings, it's the polite thing to do. But thanks so much for posting this! It's definitely one solution.

[livejournal.com profile] kalpurna has a post with a few different ways to do warnings, if people don't like the back line, for whatever reason.

Thanks much for the info! Reading fanfic & seeing the cool things other people do in their LJs are my motivators to learn bits of HTML & other coding & image manip & so on. I figure it's time to bite the bullet & come into the 2000s.... ;-)

Thanks - useful for spoiler-warnings, too.

(To be honest, I'm more likely to be upfront about warnings - it's just good sense.)

Thank you for the code options! I went poking back through my fics tonight (which had the bonus benefit of giving me some fun rereading) and took a long look at what kind of material was in each story, so that I could try make a reader's experience the most positive and well-informed.
