sheafrotherdon: (Robby looks at Jack)

Do yourself a favor ([personal profile] kass I am looking at you) and do NOT read on if you have not seen the season two finale. It's too good to spoil.

I love that, with Robby's final confessions to Baby Jane Doe, we get to see that he's been spinning out since she arrived in episode one. There's been a lot of debate across fandom about what the fulcrum point was in his decline, but to have it be set off by the abandonment of a child in ways that we have no idea about until much later in the season - that was so satisfying to me. There were so many notes in that scene that I loved - that we see Robby as compassionate and gentle, who we've been told he was before Adamson's death but never fully seen; that he had his reckoning in pedes where he lost Adamson, but - crucially - where the scales tip over to life this time. The dim lights, the privacy, an audience of a child (actual; Robby at eight) . . . beautifully done.

I also really enjoyed the scenes with Jack this episode, because Jack was off his game a little. In an interview, Shawn says the procedure to save the woman with eclampsia was his first time, which is why it was important that it was he and Robby together - but you don't necessarily need that detail to know that Jack is a little jumpy, a little less smooth, perhaps a bit more rattled than we've seen him. Similarly, when he's talking to Robby alone in the trauma bay, he's clearly searching for the words that will reach him, and thinking of his own losses and the prospect of another one, and he can't stand still, he's messing with his ring after he makes the point about his lost wife. And yet he's quintessentially Jack too - he has his eyes on Robby throughout the episode; in the trauma bay discussion he keeps moving closer and closer, further and further into Robby's personal space, and then he hugs him THOROUGHLY, tips his head against Robby's. (There's also a shot of that scene on bsky, where it's taken from further back, and you can see Robby's hugging back.) Also, confirmation that he's Robby's emergency contact - thank you, Shawn Hatosy for that line (apparently it was his idea).

Other random points:

When Amy got out of the truck to let Whitaker drive, I was all, oh it's all over. Even more than him checking in with the baby, it was the fact that it was, essentially, his truck, and his role to drive (as decided between them) - they are more than just friends, no matter what Whitaker says. GOOD FOR THEM.

Loved the post credits scene, and LOVED that Santos asked Mel to go out to drink after the rotten day she'd had. I also loved that Whitaker corrected Javardi about Santos and said she's sarcastic and cynical but not actually angry. Whitaken and Santos as roommates forever.

Dana's storyline seemed to get short shrift. I hope they return to that and her recovery from so much trauma too.

Langdon . . . whew, man. I did love that Whitaker corrected Javardi and said he had a disorder, nice nod there, but Langdon is not healed, recovered, ready - none of those things. There are so many ways he acted in the season that are perfectly understandable for someone at that point in recovery! But he ignored people's boundaries and . . . just . . . whew. His speech to Robby about Robby getting help was not wrong, but it also wasn't right, not in the sense of Langdon knowing what's going on with Robby or being helpful. Compare to Cassie's waaaaay more on the mark comments two episodes before about friends who went seeking the edge.

Anyway, all by way of saying, given that Langdon was Robby's golden boy at some point, the most resonant part of him getting up in Robby's face to me was that then Robby went into pedes and vocalized his abandonment. Those two things connected for me in a way that was believable and satisfying, and which do not give Langdon credit for, well, much really but making himself feel better. (I wish I knew what they wanted with the only scene they've shown us outside the ED, when Langdon went to see the woman whose leg was amputated. I could not get any read on what his purpose was there, except relief that she didn't die. Which - yes. But do you get how you're so deeply implicated in what did happen?) (Also [profile] siriaeve just pointed out that the number of days Langdon says he's been sober is 6 months, not ten. Interesting.)

I need to rewatch, because the whole thing went by so fast and so much happened. But dang. That was not the ending I had imagined (and i had imagined many endings) but it really worked for me. Yay show!

Yes, sorry to the Robby/Whitaker shippers, but when that bit happened I said aloud "Oh, he's straight."

That's such a good point about what is the purpose of Langdon going up to see that patient. Why her and not the guy he did the neck thing to, etc? The fact that she was his first big patient back? The fact that Robby did question him on that one? That Robby was right on that one in a way that he wasn't and thus Robby saved her life? It wasn't super clear to me.

It was really good.

I was very moved by Abbott and Robby's scene together. I was expecting something like that but woah.

I also appreciated very much Robby's confrontations with the new doctor and her possibly career-ending medical problem. I think she wanted to tell him about it even though she kept pushing back because she needed him to get tough with her and he is just about the only one who could. When she stopped her SUV in the parking garage and started crying that was so sad. Hopefully she will stop risking everyone's lives now jesus.

There were so many very good almost-resolutions -- the info we needed to understand where people are coming from now.

What a great show.

I too am looking forward to more with Dana and with McKay and with that awesome male nurse; I forgot his name. The one who is sweet on McKay or maybe that was fanon. Anyway. I love him. I love all the night shift people.

OH AND WHITAKER YOU GET IT DUDE. He is happy. I want him to be happy. So much.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole season yet. I need to rewatch with less time between episodes.

I can explain pretty much everything Robby did during the season, but I think the show is putting too much weight on the audience. I would like to have seen a little more weight on how Robby treats the men vs the women, and I really wish he and Samira had had a different conversation. Or a longer one.

It's going to be very interesting to look at this season compared to S1, where the last 4-5 episodes were so propulsive with such a big story.
